Tommy and Robin were there when we pulled up to The Bottoms, a journey which only took twenty-five minutes. Tommy’s enthusiasm for mud-racing was as contagious as mine, about anything that involved it. I always invited him, knowing that he would want to come along. I guessed the day was not so much a milestone for me, riding my bike this time with Sasha, but more about closure of an episode I’d rather forget.

Early days, before we got together, this was one of the places where I first saw her. I’m not sure I believe in love at first sight, but there was something about her that made every other person there fade into the background that day. Like the perfect image on a wall, she stood out in a spotlight shone above her. And the funny thing was that she was watching me the same way, too. Sure, we were getting married now, but egos take a bit of soothing, like a bruise or an itch you can’t quite reach. Today was all about erasing those images from my head and testing out my new four-wheeler at the same time. With my girl.

“What’s good, girl?” Robin greeted Sasha as if she were her own friend. “I see you’ve been taking good care of Scooter. I haven’t seen him smile like that in a long time.”

“Who is Scooter?” Sasha’s eyes drifted from Robin to mine.

“It’s the nickname she gave me when we were kids,” I said.

Sasha covered her mouth and giggled. “Right, I guess I had a slow moment there.”

A few minutes of silence passed, when Tommy came between us and complimented my new set of wheels, and the fact that it was much better than the one he owned. I agreed that much, flashing a smile, and Sasha groaned. She rested her head on my shoulder and I squeezed her arm against my chest, breathing in the smell of her.

Tommy wanted us to follow his route. He drove off ahead first, but I had my own ideas about how I wanted the day to go, and I had no intention of sharing it with him. This would be the ride I’d been imagining since the first time I saw Sasha. We fastened our helmets and she climbed on behind me, her arms sneaking around my waist.

“How about we trade, bro? Let Robin ride with you this time around, and let your best man and bride-to-be pop this one off. I promise not to go too fast.” Tommy’s face came into view.

“I don’t know. That’s up to Sasha, if she’s—”

“I’d rather not. This is only my second time riding on one of these things and I prefer to be close to you, where I am comfortable. No offense.” Her hand tightened around my waist, and I could feel her eyes lingering on my shoulders.

“None taken,” Tommy mumbled.

“Ready?” I shouted over my shoulder.

“I’m always ready, baby!”

“Alright, hold on.” I revved up the bike and set off at full speed, behind Tommy and Robin.
